tagaraga
Founded in 2018, Tagaraga – Mercy Ministries Mozambique e.V. is a German
charitable organization which supports the work of Dr. med. Sina Scherf in Mozambique for community development, healthcare, and educational projects. Our Christian faith is the foundation and motivation for everything we do. To achieve sustainable and all-encompassing aid for the local people, we regard the invitation to know Jesus Christ and the experience of God’s supernatural ways as inseparable from all the practical and medical help.
Tagaraga means “Mercy” in the Carungo language. The Carungo people live in the Inhassunge district situated in the Zambezia province of Mozambique. A small tributary of the Zambezi river separates Inhassunge from the provincial capital city Quelimane which makes Inhassunge an island. It is inhabited by an estimated amount of 100,000 people today.
Having grown up in Quelimane, a young man grew to love this people – a people he had been warned about in his youth… a people labeled as witches and worthless beings. Thanks to missionaries who profoundly impacted the life of this young man, he gave his life to Christ and acquired a heart for missions.
Being reminded of the people of Carungo during a biblical lecture one day, he felt God moving his heart through the bible verse in the book of Act, chapter 10, verse 15; “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.” Back then, it became very clear to the 21-year-old Mozambican that God had not forgotten the people of Carungo, and that he had to go to them to tell them that.
This man’s name is Justino. He has lived with the Carungo people on Inhassunge for over a decade as a missionary and friend. Today he leads a Missionary base started by “Youth with a Mission” (Jovens com uma Missao, JOCUM) in Quelimane and that is where the story of Tagaraga begins…
